It’s just curiosity about what that would be like, and what kind of person that is, and can you sympathize with that person at all? So, I think that’s really where Poster Girl comes from. Obviously, Sonya is not like the main character of Divergent, but I was interested in what might happen to someone who wasn’t on the right side of the revolution. I think I had lingering questions about it. I started my career writing about a dystopian overthrow. Then this one, I think it really just came from like, okay, well, what other stories do we need to hear the endings of? So, Chosen Ones is like post-saving the world. VERONICA ROTH: So, my work for adults has been kind of exploring what happens after the stories that we have already heard. How did you land on this premise and backdrop? What did you want to explore here? KATIE TAMOLA: Poster Girl follows a young woman named Sonya who, after serving as the literal face for the Delegation, an oppressive surveillance state, loses everyone she loves and is placed in a political prison. Shondaland caught up with Veronica Roth to discuss her need for the “bitter in the bittersweet,” crafting her loneliest character to date, writing about freedom, and more.

However, nothing in Sonya’s life is ever straightforward, and the sins of the past - her own and those of her loved ones - must be reckoned with as she fights for her life. If Sonya can find a missing girl, she can forever leave the confines of jail. But as fate has it, her former foe Alexander offers her a chance at freedom. She thinks she’s relegated to the four walls of prison for the rest of her life, lying low and watching as those around her die. Sonya is the youngest person in the prison, yet the weight of tragedy, loss, and destruction has made her feel as though she’s lived far beyond her few years. When the Delegation is overthrown and Sonya loses everyone she has ever loved, she is placed in a political prison called the Aperture.
